Over the past decade, women have been provided with opportunities that have been previously denied them, such as being allowed to serve in submarines. There is, however, a holy grail of sorts that remains unattainable, at least for now: acceptance into the elite Navy SEALs.A feature in The Washington Post acknowledges that the doors to the Navy SEALs remain closed to women, but suggested that it may slowly be opening. The Post quoted Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who shared that “as a philosophical thing, there shouldn’t be anything that’s closed off as a career.” Despite the fact that there is a ban in place against women serving in combat and infantry roles, an increasing number of women are now serving alongside special operations forces in support roles.
It is interesting to note that Secretary Mabus did not totally rule out the idea that a woman may serve in an elite team such as the SEALs in the future. “We’re going to have to take some careful, well-thought-out steps in that direction,” the Navy Secretary said.
The Post indicated that this was an idea that Mabus shared with Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who also alluded to the idea late last year.
The fact that the Navy has decided to allow women to serve on submarines may be one of the “careful steps” that is being referred to. Eighteen women have been selected to participate in the program, and eight of them are slated to report to submarines in November as supply corps officers. Lt. Cmdr. Jean Marie Sullivan, chief of the naval personnel’s office of women’s policy, shared: “We are making a concerted effort to not only look at retaining women, but at bringing more women into the Navy.”

Navy SEALS use canine forces from time to time when executing mission strategies and as I mentioned some months ago, the military sunk some serious money into the protection of military animals with high tech tactical gear. A report from Daily India divulges the amount of money spent on this gear:
“Last year, the military spent 86,000 dollars on four tactical vests to outfit Navy Seal dogs. The SEALs hired Winnipeg, Canada-based contractor K9 Storm to gear up their four-legged, canine partners, which it has used in battle since World War I. K9 Storm’s flagship product is the 20,000 – 30,000 dollars. The tactical body armour is wired with a collapsible video arm, two-way audio, and other attachable gadgets, Today Tech reports. “
This type of tactical vest was used on the dog who aided the Navy SEALS in their mission to take out Osama bin Laden last month. The amount of tasks that this vest can handle is very impressive – especially when you consider that it is a dog wearing it!
“… the patented load-bearing harness would have enabled a Navy SEAL handler to rappel from the helicopter with his dog strapped to his body. Once in the compound, the dog could run ahead to scout as the handler issued commands through an integrated microphone and speaker in the armor. The proprietary speaker system enables handlers to relay commands at low levels to the dog.”

If you follow @tacticalgearcom on Twitter, you probably have seen a Tactical Do or a Tactical Don’t in your feed. Tactical Don’ts usually feature mildly entertaining stories about lawbreakers that leave you thinking “What the …?” Although not as common as the don’ts, Tactical Dos happen and focus on tips, gear or positive events that have occurred in the tactical community.
Below are some of our favorite dos and don’ts.
Tactical Don’ts
Drugs plus math equals jail. Shortly after phoning 911 with a consumer complaint, Dexter White was arrested. Why you may ask? It turns out that he was upset that his drug dealer did not give him change for his illegal stimulant-based purchase. Perhaps Mr. White should not have smoked that $20 of crack before calling the dispatcher. via Smoking Gun
Argument settled – you both get arrested. One of the more common calls that police officers receive are domestic disturbances. Generally they have to go in the field for these, but two Illinoisans decided to bring their argument to the police station. State troopers were waiting to help settle the matter. Upon their arrival, the officers determined the two were intoxicated and were arrested. via Fox 2 News
No such thing as parking ticket immunity. Apparently, diplomatic immunity only goes so far. Foreign diplomats have amassed more than $17.2 million in parking fines and New York City officials have had enough. Keep your prosthetics to yourself. Ryan Gustafson, of Oregon, threw everything he had into escaping the California Highway Patrol, even flinging his prosthetic leg at officers. After stealing a pickup, he lead officers on a 60-mile car chase through two counties. Eventually, the car thief was caught and arrested for vehicle theft, evading police officers and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. via Daily News
Don’t run over dad. One Florida woman was arrested for a hit-and-run incident. Upon learning why she was being pulled over, she realized she must have hit her father as he regularly walked that stretch of road. Dad didn’t have any hard feelings. After being treated for minor injuries, he immediately set to getting his daughter released. What a guy. via Smoking Gun
Waving a fake gun around will get you shot. Who knew? Just because you know it’s a fake gun, doesn’t mean the police officers do. One man found this out the hard way in late April near the Bronx. He was taken into custody after his injuries were treated. via New York Post
“Outsmart” yourself. One Santa Rosa County burglar may have thought a bit too big for his own good. As deputies were closing in on him, he decided to call 911 to report a fake burglary in a nearby building. He hoped this would draw officers away from the building he was hiding in, however, in the end all it earned him was the additional charge of making a false report. Tactical Dos
Check for tracking devices. Do you feel like someone is following you? You may not be far off. Wired recently published a piece on how to check your car for tracking devices.
Always be prepared. Many tactical operators believe in this saying with every fiber of their being. Zombie apocalypse, nuclear holocaust, alien invasion … Tactical Sammiches have you covered. With a shelf life of two years, you should be able to wait out the worst of the disasters. via Think Geek
Use social media for good. Police officers in Columbus, Ohio are using Facebook and Twitter to cut down on crime. The “Fugitive of the Week” profile has caught three offenders to justice since its introduction just over a month ago. via ABC 6

From its conceal carry new line, Woolrich Elite Series Tactical has announced the first item available in 2011. Based on the Dorrington, one of Woolrich’s most popular traditional jackets, the Elite Discreet Carry Twill Jacket ($129.99, $149.99) has large, reinforced inner pockets with integrated holster loops to accommodate handguns with up to a six-inch barrel. In a prior interview with the Tactical Gear Blog, the then newly appointed merchandising manager, Brian Miller, hinted at the shake-up in the concealed carry line.
“As we go forward with the spring 2011 additions to the line, I think people are going to rethink their perceptions of tactical clothing and how it can be worn for everyday concealed and carry,” stated Miller. Revisiting its more conventional clothing designs, Woolrich Elite Series Tactical has found a way to incorporate tactical features like large pockets and holster loops without compromising the overall lines of the garments.
Elite Discreet Carry Twill Jacket
Unique to the brand, a double angle on the inner pocket allows easier access to gear, while preventing the pocket from flaring open. The rear locker loop conceals the entrance to a hidden accessory tunnel, allowing the storage of plastic restraints and providing routing for electrical wires.
Inside of the front hand-warmer pockets, the internal accessory loops are set at a 45-degree angle for optimized access and security. They are perfect for carrying spare magazines, flashlights and other tactical tools.
With a fully adjustable hip-length waistband and cuffs, the jacket has a shell made of 11.5-ounce cotton twill and a polyester Sherpa liner. The sleeves are insulated with a diamond-quality 60-gram Arctic Insulation.

WT Tactical Soft Shell Jacket
Soft shells continue to be a favorite breathable option when it comes to outdoor gear. That’s because the jacket isn’t entirely waterproof but “water repellent,” which ups its breathability factor by a lot. This means that when rain drops or other wet debris hit the jacket, it beads up and can be brushed off.
Items deemed “soft shell” come in various forms. The Wild Things (WT) Tactical Soft Shell Jacket ($169.15) is no different. Compared to other soft shell jackets I’ve experienced, it definitely had more of a stretch factor to it. The jacket is made up of a mixture of nylon and spandex. The material is definitely lightweight and comfortable.
For those unfamiliar with WT Tactical, it’s a spinoff of a US-based company that builds technical gear for alpine climbers. According to its website, it has accumulated through the years a “cult-like following by the world’s climbing elite.” Its tactical division specializes in designing apparel for military and law enforcement specialists, all of which is made in the USA.
While I found the two sleeve zipper pockets interesting, I didn’t feel like I would ever really have a use for it. Sure, you could stow IDs or papers in there, but anything fairly substantial would cause additional weight on your arm and just feel awkward. One appears on the lower right-hand forearm and the other on the upper left part of the arm. I found the upper left arm pocket much more accessible and user friendly. Stylistically the pockets are cool; functionally, though, not so much. The other two zippered hand pockets contain a lightweight mesh lining that is attached to an additional inner pocket, which can be accessed by opening the jacket.
My favorite feature on the jacket was the nylon ripstop stow-away hood. It was my first encounter with this type of hood and found it to be quite helpful in minimizing bulk. Accessed by unzipping the collar, the hood provides ample protection in light rain. However, if met with a downpour, I can’t guarantee that it will keep you completely dry.
Speaking of water repellency, I tested the jackets ability to block moisture using the most extreme method possible—the kitchen sink. I held parts of the jacket under running water and found that it only began to absorb after 15 seconds of direct contact with water. Even though the jacket doesn’t claim to be waterproof, it certainly is water repellent.
All-in-all, this is a well-constructed soft shell jacket that I will continue to wear for a long time. Plus, it comes in MultiCam, so perhaps I will make an addition to my soft shell collection soon enough.

Propper Lightweight Tactical Trousers

We received this letter from one of Barre Army Navy Store's valued customers. We wanted to share his observations:
JUST recieved 6 pair of the Propper BDU pants (http://shop.vtarmynavy.com/propper-lightweight-tactical-trousers-c1299.aspx) that I ordered and I am SO pleased that I have to tell any and all that if they have outgrown the kid thing of every day wearing of jeans,this is your adult pair of EDC pants.
They have 11 [ yes ELEVEN ] pockets and that actually is enough for even me.
I am a retired LEO and an outdoorsman,so I carry 3 knives,one or 2 handguns and an assortment of tools.
Flashlight,lighter,wallet and police I.D. wallet.
Cash,writing notebook [ CRS = cant remember sh!t ],pen.
The pants are light enough to wear in summer and in the fields during warm [ hot ] weather.
Thereby keeping the risk of bites from all sorts of critters ,much less.
They dry FAST and look good enough to go to dinner at all but the most fancy places.
I just dress it up or down accoring to where I am going and with whom,my wife has commented that they look so much more 'adult' than a 60+ year old with dungarees on.
I actually never thought I would give up the jeans and yes I still own a few pair.
BUT the BDU's = I own at least 12 pair now and they serve all sorts of duty,housework to dinner [ just got back from a nice local place too ].
So my advise to all REAL adult men is take a good hard look at the Propper pants line and see thay they serve well.
Oh and btw they have a double rear pocket to allow for a wallet and a DEEP knife or other tool.
